Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
