While Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Image Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed loud noises reverberating around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. It was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was alone running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Tragedy

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to numerous those hurt.
