What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
