The President Invites Loved Ones of Injured Military Soldiers to the White House
President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the family of a National Guard member tragically killed last week to attend the White House.
He mentioned that he contacted her family and they were “deeply grieving”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting
US army specialist Beckstrom, twenty years old, was fatally shot in a violent incident on last Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in critical condition.
Memorials across West Virginia have been held in their memory.
Presidential Call
The commander-in-chief stated he’s discussed a meeting at the presidential residence for the parents of both members of the state Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a hard experience, visit the White House. We’re going to honor her,” the president told reporters. “And similarly with him, recover or not.”
Community Support
Community members came together over the weekend at a local school in the state to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the state guard as part of Trump’s government program to assist policing efforts in Washington DC.
Paying Tribute to Beckstrom
“Sarah was the kind of student that instructors wished for. She carried herself with calm resilience, a bright grin and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the leader of Beckstrom’s previous school, stated to the media. “She was sweet, caring and always willing to support those in need.”
Funeral plans for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Legal Steps and Policy Adjustments
Authorities have indicted a 29-year-old Afghan national with a charge of murder and charges of assault with intent to kill while carrying a weapon.
The tragedy caused the government to suspend asylum processing and temporarily stop granting visas to owners of Afghan passports.
Condition of Andrew Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of the city, enlisted in February 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman High, as reported by the Associated Press.
He remains under medical supervision and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s leader Patrick Morrisey said on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
Attorney general Pam Bondi stated on Fox News Sunday that she planned to speak to Wolfe’s family.
Legacy of Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from her high school in 2023 and began her service not long after, working as a law enforcement officer with honor, per the military.
“She had a lot of goodness and she certainly had courage,” Morrisey told the crowd at the service. “Though her time ended too soon, she has created a legacy that’s going to endure.”
