Six oddball but brave youngsters fall into the way of a vast and dreadful supernatural darkness that has entered our realm from the deepest abyss of oblivion. They are compelled to devote their lives confronting it, experiencing terror upon terror in the ordeal.

A Resonant Plot with a New Approach

This describes the premise, roughly, of Stephen King’s novel It (a standout in his career; no arguments). It is also the plot of King’s son Joseph Hillstrom King’s new chilling tome, in which six friends call forth the age-old, infinitely malicious serpent the Dragon King from the Long Dark to aid them in overcoming some antagonists. As one might expect, their arcane ceremony backfires.

Acknowledging a Family Legacy

The author launched his profession striving diligently to distance himself from his renowned parent, adopting the nom de plume he maintains to this day and avoiding meeting his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his father). However, in his newest work, he leans into it. There are lines that deliberately echo some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that brings to mind a recurring theme in King’s works (a game of puzzles). In this whopper of a novel, Joe Hill takes pleasure in his heritage, and readers share in the joy.

Introducing the Main Characters

Returning to the group: the majority are scholars at the made-up Rackham College in Maine. There’s Arthur, academic and brilliant, deciphering historical enigmas in his free moments; another key figure, wealthy, sharp, and inclined to bulldoze anyone who stands in his way; Donna and Donovan; the attractive Allie herself. Then we have Gwen, who remains outside their academic circle, but assumes a vital role of their band as they toy, partly convinced, partly skeptical, in arcane arts.

The Fateful Summoning

Arthur is, as a result of external pressures, forced into stealing prized manuscripts from his cherished academic collection by a set of regional villains. This devastates his scholarly soul, notably because he’s made to take the library’s most valuable and chilling title: the journal of occultist the historical figure (condemned “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the binding is crafted from his flesh). The intrepid group peruse the diary, realize they are able to call forth what the author references as a armoured devil” to help Arthur out with his blackmail problem – and devote the remaining story facing the fallout. Covering a generation, the author shifts with natural fluency between genres: as the friends strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, picking people who are obviously evil to immolate, or hunting down ways to destroy the entity themselves, we move between suspense to grim fantasy, clandestine torment to love story to horror. One particularly memorable shift was to a quest story, far beneath the surface beneath this UK region, a part tinged by JRR Tolkien that was gloriously terrifying.

A Detailed Canvas of Horror and Optimism

The novel features trolls – the classic variety and internet antagonists, properly scary and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and treacheries, breath-taking moments of courage and instances of terrible wickedness, both earthly and otherworldly. This is a remarkable achievement: a frightening tale that is primarily a ode to the creative spirit, and to love and friendship. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their dragon to life with the force of their minds.
