British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
