In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
